Some Native American tribes called the August Moon the “Sturgeon Moon” because they knew that the sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this Full Moon. They also called August’s Moon the “Full Green Corn Moon.”

Different tribes had different Moon name preferences. Other examples for August are: “Wheat Cut Moon” (San Ildefonso, and San Juan), “Moon When All Things Ripen” (Dakotah Sioux), and ”Blueberry Moon” (Ojibwe).** www.almanac.com

You say you love your dog? Sure you feed them, groom them, make sure their vaccinations are current, take them for walks and even see the vet at least once a year.
But according to veterinarian Oscar Chavez, a professor of canine clinical nutrition and chief medical officer for JustFoodForDogs, there are some important steps you should be taking that can considerably improve your dog’s health and wellbeing and even extend his life.
His tips:
· BRUSH THEIR TEETH –Dental disease can cause your dog pain and may even lead to heart and kidney disease. You should brush their teeth daily and schedule annual dental cleanings under anesthesia to prevent dental disease. Avoid using human toothpaste as it contains fluoride. Pet stores now carry toothbrushes and toothpaste that are safe for pets.
· HOMECOOK THEIR MEALS -- Use only fresh whole food (ground beef, fish, broccoli, sweet potatoes, carrots, etc.) and cook the veggies as your dog derives less nutritional value when you serve them raw. Avoid spices as they can cause stomach pain and intestinal problems. Save money by preparing large volumes of food and freeze it until you’re ready to serve it. For maximum nutritional value, balance the food with nutrient packets; it’s akin to people taking their daily vitamins. (JustFoodForDogs offers free do-it-yourself recipes on its website.)
· CALM THEIR NERVES – Many dogs suffer from separation anxiety, can’t tolerate large groups, get rattled when encountering other dogs, are startled by loud noises, etc. There are calming agents on the market that can alleviate these symptoms and are safe since they do not contain pharmaceutical agents.
· PROTECT THEIR PAWS -- On hot summer days, walk your dogs before 9 a.m. or after 8 p.m. and avoid streets and sidewalks in favor of shaded grassy and dirt areas.
“Our dogs can’t speak for themselves so it’s up to us to take the extra steps to ensure their health as doing so can certainly extend their lives and make them happier,” said Chavez.
Chavez along with a team of other veterinarians — many of whom hold rare subspecialty degrees (i.e., toxicology, nutrition, dermatology, etc) — were instrumental in the development of JustFoodForDogs (JFFD), an alternative to commercial kibble found on the shelves of your grocer and pet store retailers. JFFD has distinguished itself as a game-changer in the industry by encouraging pet parents to embrace small-batch, human-grade food made from USDA-grade meats and produce that is “fit for human consumption but nutritionally balanced for pets.” The company also offers online recipes for those who want to make their own healthy, whole food meals from scratch at home.
In addition to its 13 stores throughout Southern California, many of which feature exhibition kitchens so that customers can see how the food is made, JFFD also operates boutiques within dozens of Pet Food Express locations in Northern California and recently inked an agreement with mega-retailer Petco to open 400 “stores within stores” in the next 48 months. Many of the Petco locations will feature the exhibition kitchens.

This beloved tale, in which a Kansas farm girl travels over the rainbow to discover the magical power of home, has been entertaining audiences for generations. The Wizard of Oz includes the songs “Over The Rainbow,” “Munchkinland (Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead),: “If I Only Had A Brain/A Heart/The Nerve,” “We’re Off to See The Wizard (follow the Yellow Brick Road),” The Jitterbug,” and “Ther Merry Old Land of Oz,” and “If I were King Of The Forest,” It’s a faithful adaptation of the film, recreating the dialogue and structure of the MGM classic nearly scene for scene, though it is adapted for lie stage performance.
